Mulberry fruits and leaves contain a wide variety of vitamins, minerals, and
other important nutrients. Mulberry extract contains moranoline, which delays
the absorption of carbohydrates and promotes healthy glucose levels already
within normal range. The anthocyanins in Mulberry are strong antioxidants and
may provide cardiovascular protection, immune enhancement, and stress reduction
as potential health benefits. Mulberries are also a source of resveratrol which
is found primarily in red wine.
Besides being an antioxidant, resveratrol is an anti-mutagen and a strong anti-inflammatory. An anti-mutagen is a compound that inhibits the mutation of healthy normal cells into cancerous growths and tumors. Chronic inflammation is believed to be at the root of many diseases, including heart disease and cancer. Synthetic anti-inflammatories cannot be taken on a regular basis to prevent chronic inflammation without risking other health problems. Natural anti-inflammatories, on the other hand, are found primarily in plant foods and can be consumed on a regular basis throughout a person’s life with no side effects Since it is one of the natural anti-inflammatories, it is believed that the benefits of resveratrol may help prevent of heart disease, cancer and other diseases associated with chronic inflammation. Resveratrol also may have an anti-aging effect on cells due to combating free radical damage. Benefits of resveratrol are currently being studied for its effects on Alzheimer’s disease and in cancer prevention, suppression and treatment.
Mulberry has long been used in traditional medicines. Among its many uses, it
has been given as a tonic to treat the kidneys, fatigue, anemia, and weakness.
Clinical research has shown that Mulberry can provide multiple health benefits,
including helping to promote healthy glucose levels; encouraging healthy
cellular replication and membrane stability; promoting healthy cholesterol; and
controlling the digestion of carbohydrates.
