Traditionally, acacia gum was applied to loose teeth by ancient Egyptians as its thick mucilaginous qualities helped to support the tooth while the astringent qualities tightened up the surrounding gum tissue. Traditionally the gum was also applied to open wounds as an antiseptic balm. The Aztecs used it as a food and dye.

Acacia is a monophyletic genus of the flowering plant in the legume family fabaceae. The common name is thorn trees. It is a shrub-like tree native to tropical regions of Africa and Australia that can grow as tall as 15 feet. Traditionally the sap and the fiber are used for their medicinal properties. Acacia gum is a brittle, odorless and generally tasteless material called arabin. Arabin is the calcium salt of the polysaccharide arabic acid. The structure of this gum is built upon a backbone of D-galactose. The molecular weight is large and lies in the range of 200,000 to 600,000 daltons. It is soluble in water but does not dissolve in alcohol. This is actually a very common ingredient found in health foods today because of its soluble fiber content and mucilaginous properties. Also known as arabic gum, it is a very versatile hydrocolloid with many applications. This “gum” is a superior emulsifier and is widely used in the production of beverage and flavor emulsions as well as meal replacements. Due to its low viscosity and adhesive properties this makes a wonderful ingredient for confections and coatings.

This medicinal food is a well known source of prebiotics which means it gives the gut the building blocks to set up an environment to produce good bacteria or probiotics. Acacia is most well known and studied for this reason. There has been much mention of it in the research on IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) which is a general term for a series of symptoms that affect gut health. Both soluble fiber and prebiotics have been shown to support the body’s ability to have a healthy inflammation response within the gut. An insufficient or unbalanced microbiome has proven to be one of the main causes of these symptoms. Traditionally this medicinal food is also used topically for supporting the healing of cuts, scrapes and burns.

Constituents of Acacia Fiber include:

  • Gum acacia contains neutral sugars (rhamnose, arabinose, and galactose), acids (glucuronic acid and 4-methoxyglucuronic acid), arabinose, galactose, rhamnose, glucoronic acid, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium. Its complex structure is still not completely known. Its backbone chain consists of D-galactose units, and its side chains are composed of D-glucuronic acid units with l-rhamnose or l-arabinose as end units

Suggested Use: As a fiber supplement mix one teaspoon is 8-12oz of water or juice.
