Cat’s Claw Bark Powder
Cat’s Claw has been used since the Inca civilization. (3) Also known as the “life-giving vine of Peru,” or “uña de gato,” Cat’s Claw is a thick woody vine from the Amazon rainforest.
Cat’s Claw - A Sacred Healing Plant
Also found in tropical areas of South and Central America, Cat’s Claw has been used as a sacred plant of healing for over 2000 years.
Because it has a hook-like thorn that looks like the claws of a cat, the plant resembles its Spanish folk name “uña de gato.”
There are several species of cat’s claw, but the two most common species used and marketed interchangeably for their various properties are Uncaria tomentosa and Uncaria guianensis. (1)
Traditionally, Cat’s Claw has been used for contraception, inflammation, some sicknesses and to stimulate the immune system, in addition to a variety of other remedies. (3) Although there are no randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or published human outcome studies, some conditions reportedly improved osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and some chronic illnesses. (2)
Traditionally Used for Aches & Pains, Immune-System and Anti-Aging
Cat’s Claw may also have potential in its ability to support anti-aging. The discovery of some Cat’s Claw properties have possibly led to some remarkable anti-inflammatory, immunostimulating and protective effects. These results bring the strong hypothesis that Cat’s Claw could be effective in the topical treatment of some skin conditions. (2)
Today, Cat’s Claw may be used as a dietary supplement for a variety of possible health conditions including viral infections, Alzheimer’s disease, arthritis, ulcers, hemorrhoids, parasites, and leaky bowel syndrome. (3)
The bark and root of Cat’s Claw are used to make liquid extracts, capsules, tablets, and tea. (3)
