This amazing tonic herb whose history goes back 2000 years has a great name and an equally great story of how it got its name. A goat herder in the high elevations of China began to notice that his goats were behaving more passionately for some strange reason at certain times. After observing his herd for sometime, he noticed that this behavior happened shortly after they were done feeding on a particular patch of plants. This patch was composed of 25 species of plants in the berberidaceae family.  Hence the name horny goat weed.  

While most traditionally used in chinese medicine as a yang jing tonic which is known to support life essence. Western society has taken quite an interest in this amazing tonic herb.  Dr. James Duke, an ethnobotanist, who worked for the department of agriculture for over 40 years insists that this herb does live up to its name. A human clinical study supervised by doctors Steven Lamm and Gerald Secor examined the effects of a formula with horny goat weed as the primary herb. In the study 25 healthy men, and, 13 who used viagra were dosed with this formula for 45 days.  They were given additional doses 1-2 hours prior to passionate activity in order to study its overall effects.  After 45 days, the double blind portion of the study began. A placebo and active product were given randomly to these healthy men who reported good results from the first phase. The second phase lasted for another 15 days and everyone was evaluated after both phases.  The results showed that a consistent use for a minimum of 45 days has a positive effect on 60% of the healthy men and 45% of the ones taking viagra.  

While it is well known that the whole is more powerful the the sum of its parts, one of the constituents in this herb called, Icariin, seems to be the primary focus of researchers. They are claiming it may have the ability to support passionate wellbeing. Icariin has been thought to work by supporting smooth muscles tissue relaxation. The reason why this is relevant is that when internal tension of tissues can be relaxed, this will cause the central nervous system to shift from fight/flight into relaxation mode. In other words, it may in fact support the body in adapting to external stressors.
