AphrodisiacImage of Green icon with heart coming out of a bottle

In Western medical literature, aphrodisiacs are categorized as food or pharmaceutical substances designed to stimulate sexual instinct, heighten sexual desire, and augment pleasure and performance (Corazza et al., 2014, Journal of Sexual Medicine).

This concept sharply contrasts with the framework in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where aphrodisiacs are principally employed to reinforce Kidney Qi and essence, both of which are critical constituents of an individual's Jing (life essence) (Chen & Chen, 2004, Chinese Medical Herbology and Pharmacology). The kidneys are considered the repository for Jing, and augmenting Kidney Qi is believed to have a broad spectrum of benefits, including enhanced sexual function (Liu et al., 2011, Journal of Ethnopharmacology). Thus, while Western medicine focuses on the more immediate effects of aphrodisiacs on sexual performance, TCM delves into the complex interplay between sexual health and overall vitality by targeting foundational elements like Kidney Qi and Jing.
