Cough ReliefGreen icon or person needing relief from cough

Western medicine classifies coughs into four primary categories: wet, dry, paroxysmal, and croup, each distinguished by specific characteristics and root causes (Morice et al., 2014, The Lancet). In contrast, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) delineates five disharmony patterns associated with coughing, such as Qi Deficiency, Phlegm-fluids, Rebellious Qi, Kidney Yang Deficiency, and Wind heat invading the lungs (Chen et al., 2017, Journal of Ethnopharmacology). These divergent frameworks offer unique diagnostic and therapeutic insights into cough management. However, further empirical research is essential for the holistic integration of these perspectives, thereby contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of cough etiology and treatment (Ni et al., 2015, Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine).
