Eye & Vision HealthGreen icon of healthy eye

In Western medicine, eye health encompasses not only optimal visual acuity but also the overall health of the ocular system and its functional role in overall well-being. Vision impairment is often an early symptom of systemic medical conditions such as diabetes, circulatory disorders, and hypertension (Wong et al., Ophthalmology, 2006). In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), eye health is closely related to the liver's physiological functions; the liver meridian is believed to "open into the eyes." A well-nourished liver is thought to support visual acuity and prevent issues such as dry eyes and blurred vision (Li et al., Journal of Ethnopharmacology, 2018). TCM identifies pathological patterns like "liver fire rising" as a potential underlying cause for ocular discomfort and swelling. Thus, both Western and TCM perspectives underscore the importance of eye health as an integral part of overall health management.
