In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Jing, or essence, is a critical concept that fuels physical, mental, and spiritual growth, believed to be inherited from parents at conception and determining longevity and vitality (Maciocia, "Foundations of Chinese Medicine," 2005). TCM categorizes Jing into three types: Pre-Heaven, Post-Heaven, and Kidney Essence. Pre-Heaven essence, originating from parental inheritance, is stored in the kidneys and sets the foundation for one's constitutional health (Zhang et al., Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 2014). Post-Heaven essence is developed from environmental factors like food and air, processed by the stomach and spleen (Li et al., Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, 2013). Kidney Essence represents a combination of both Pre and Post-Heaven essence, acting as a reserve: when Post-Heaven essence is abundant, it replenishes the kidneys, while deficiency leads to the depletion of Pre-Heaven essence, potentially causing essence exhaustion (Wang et al., American Journal of Chinese Medicine, 2012).
