Nutritional Yeast Powder
Nutritional yeast powder is a deactivated form of Yeast made from a single-celled organism, Saccharomyces cerevisiae. It has been around for centuries and was first used by the ancient Egyptians and Greeks as a food source.
In the early 20th century, nutritional yeast powder was used in the brewing industry as a “brewer’s yeast” to make beer. In the 1940s, it was used for animal feed and human consumption in Europe.
In the 1960s, it was developed as a nutritional supplement and marketed as “Red Star yeast.” Today, nutritional yeast powder is used in many vegan and vegetarian diets as a savory condiment and a source of B vitamins.
It is also used as an ingredient in many baked goods and as a topping for popcorn and other snacks.
Nutritional yeast powder has become a popular health food due to its high protein content and savory, cheesy flavor.
