ShinglesGreen icon of persons back with shingles

Shingles is a medical condition characterized by an acute viral infection instigated by the varicella-zoster virus, the same etiological agent responsible for chickenpox (World Health Organization, Shingles Fact Sheet). Post-chickenpox, the virus may enter a latent phase in neural ganglia and reactivate under specific conditions such as immunosuppression or age-related decline in immune function, as supported by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and peer-reviewed clinical studies (Journal of Infectious Diseases, 2019).

In contrast, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) posits that shingles are a manifestation of imbalances in liver and gallbladder meridians, influenced by pathogenic factors like dampness, heat, or wind (National Institute of Health, Complementary Medicine Review). Nutritional aspects, as explored by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), also contribute to the multifactorial nature of shingles, thereby necessitating an integrative approach for diagnosis and management.
