What is silicon dioxide

Why We Use Silicon Dioxide in Some Products

Z Natural Foods provides transparency and quality with all our products. We take pride in sourcing the best all-natural products and promise you an end-result that is clean, fresh, and pure.

From ingredients to the country of origin, and a Certificates of Analysis (CoA), we provide full documentation on all our products, and we even archive ‘batch lot numbers’.

One product that is commonly misunderstood in our industry is silicon dioxide.

To provide you with a quality product and a delightful experience, occasionally some of our products include a small amount of natural silicon dioxide.

Silicon dioxide exists naturally within the earth and our bodies.7

Acerola Cherry PowderSilicon Dioxide is one ofthe earth's most abundant minerals derived from Silicon (Si) and Oxygen (O2) to form SiO2. It is widely used as one of the most common anti-caking fillers, most often used to prevent the clumping of natural, raw materials.

For example, our Freeze-Dried Organic Acerola Cherry Powder is one of our most popular products.

We use the smallest necessary amount (by weight) of the anti-caking silicon dioxide so that it is very easy for you to dip a spoon into your Z Natural Foods’ stand-up, resealable bag and effortlessly scoop a tablespoon or two for your smoothies, yogurts or to sprinkle on foods.

Acerola Cherry PowderIf we didn’t carefully mix in a small amount of silicon dioxide, your bag of Acerola Cherry powder would literally become solid and hard as a rock -- making you reach for a hammer to break off a chunk every time you wanted to supply your body with Vitamin C and gain the nourishment that our Organic Acerola Cherry powder provides.

Silicon Dioxide is a trace mineral necessary for healthy bones, skin, hair, and nails -- found naturally in many plant foods

In the human body, silicon is a trace mineral found in blood vessels, cartilage, tendons, bone, collagen, and skin. Recent research has also found that Silicon is helpful in keeping blood vessel walls healthy, with the aorta being exceptionally rich in silicon.8

In fact, the benefits of Silicon go beyond what most people think. That’s because Silicon, in union with Nitric Oxide (NO), plays an essential role in the health of our arteries to keep the fibers in the blood vessel wall elastic.8 This elasticity helps to make the artery wall impermeable to the fatty infiltration and calcium deposition associated with plaque formation. Ongoing research on silicon makes it an important nutrient in the scope of our developing understanding of cardiovascular nutrition.8

Recent research shows that tissue levels of silicone decrease with aging and a deficiency are characterized by dry, brittle hair, brittle nails, poor skin quality, poor calcium utilization and even arterial disease.9 Additionally, silicon supplementation increases the collagen in growing bone by 100%.9 The recommended intake ranges from 200 to 500 mg/day for adults.

When necessary, Z Natural Foods uses minimal amounts of silicon dioxide while never exceeding 2% of the weight of the food (often using just a fraction of this amount).

In fact, the United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA)4 and the World Health Organization (WHO)5 both have silicone dioxide acceptable use guidelines. We adhere to these guidelines and we strive to do what is best for our customers by keeping our foods as natural as possible in order to maintain the integrity of the natural foods.

Silicon Dioxide is naturally found in fruits, vegetables, garlic, and even dark greens

Additionally, this essential trace mineral is naturally found in fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains, and seeds, as well as herbs such as parsley, garlic, and horsetail. Horsetail, in particular, is a common ingredient in hair, skin, and nail products because of its high content of silicon dioxide.

The fruits and vegetables that rank the highest in this amazing trace mineral include grapes, oranges, apples, cherries, plums, artichokes, beans, peas, asparagus, beet, celery, cucumbers, lettuce, radishes, onions and dark greens of all kinds.

Silicon Dioxide is a prevalent mineral found in a wide variety of foods
and is safe and essential to our health

Understandably, many of our customers come to us confused and misinformed. In many cases, the information found on the internet is questionable and may not be accurate or current.

We urge you to do your own research from reputable sources and obtain the most reliable information about the products you consume. Z Natural Foods is proud of our transparency policy and are happy to provide you with up-to-date information on any of our products and even its particular ‘batch lot number’.

As always, we welcome your questions and inquiries.
