Purple Aronia, also known as purple chokeberry, is a shrub species native to North America with a deep history. Botanist John Bartram first documented the shrub in 1751 in Pennsylvania, and it was known among Native American cultures, who used its berries in medicines and as a dye for clothing.
Today, purple Aronia is cultivated for its edible berries and ornamental value.
It grows in moist, acidic soils and prefers full sun or partial shade, making it a popular choice for gardens and landscapes as an accent plant.
