Organic Tart Cherry Juice Powder
Our Organic Tart Cherry Juice Powder contains phenolic, naturally occurring plant compounds that may support a healthy inflammation response. The main type of phenolic in cherries is called anthocyanins. In a comprehensive phytonutrient profile that was done comparing cherries, strawberries, grapes, and apples the results for cherries were quite impressive. In all areas of phytonutrients (anthocyanins, flavanols, flavonols, other polyphenols, and natural compounds) cherries had them all, while the other fruits came up short in 3 or more individual compounds. This alone makes cherries a superior food.
The naturally occurring nutritional and medicinal value that tart cherries possess ranks above that of most other fruits. Regular consumption of them is extremely beneficial to an individual’s health and wellness.
Medicinally, sour cherries (tart cherries) may be useful in supporting healthy sleep patterns due to its high melatonin content, a compound critical in regulating the sleep-wake cycle in humans. It is the highest known food source of melatonin.
The effects of tart cherry juice consumption were tested in a double-blind, randomized trial of runners participating in a 24-hour relay race. Runners drank two 355 milliliter beverages containing either tart cherry juice or a placebo beverage daily for one week prior to the race and during the race. (Two 355 mL bottles of tart cherry juice daily provides at least 80 mg anthocyanins which are the equivalent of 90 to 100 cherries).32
Both groups reported pain after the race. But the runners who drank tart cherry juice experienced a substantially smaller pain increase after the race. This natural protection against acute muscle soreness suggested that tart cherries must be providing some defense against muscle damage.
To confirm this, scientists conducted a controlled trial on indices of muscle recovery. Participants were given either tart cherry juice or a control drink for five days before, on the day of, and for two days after a marathon race.
Runners in the tart cherry group had significantly lower inflammation biomarkers (Interleukin-6 and C-reactive protein) compared to the placebo group. The tart cherry group also recovered isometric strength faster than the control runners, demonstrating an accelerated recovery following strenuous exercise.33
In an 8 week study in 2007 using tart cherry extract capsules to support pain levels in people with osteoarthritis, more than 50% of the people in the study saw a significant reduction in pain levels. This study was done with the product under the trade name cherryflex which is a dried whole cherry put into a capsule (just like ours minus the capsule).
