Superfood Trends Have Changed and What to Expect in 2019

2 min read time Sep 17, 2020

West Palm Beach, FL - Over 1,300 registered dietician nutritionists (RDN’s) were surveyed and released their predictions for the foods that people will be eating in 2019, per a recent industry report delivered by progressivegrocer.com.

The 7th annual ‘What’s Trending in Nutrition?’, a survey from Pollock Communications and trade publication Today’s Dietitian found that healthy and convenient foods will take the top spots in 2019 to become leading factors that drive consumer food choices. Cost and taste were more popular food features in 2018 but will present a lower motivation for consumers in the new year, the survey reports.

It is no surprise that the leading superfoods in 2018 were a variety of coconut products, dark leafy greens, and exotic fruits. 2019 trends are looking similar with a few changes to consumer tastes and behaviors. This may be because of the rising trends of low carb diets placing more focus on plant-based proteins, non-dairy milk, collagen peptides, and fermented foods.

“The rising popularity of fermented foods is likely driven by people looking for natural foods in an effort to feel better, promote gut health and the potential for reducing inflammation, says Sam Hirschberg, MBA, Director of Marketing for Z Natural Foods. We also expect collagen peptides to remain as one of the biggest wellness trends because of its high protein content and appeal as an anti-aging superfood.”

Here are the top superfoods expected to lead the 2019 trend:

  1. Collagen peptides
  2. Beets, including beet root powder
  3. Exotic fruits such as golden berries, acai, and mangosteen
  4. Fermented foods such as kefir, tempeh, miso, sauerkraut and kombucha
  5. Coconut products
  6. Ancient grains like quinoa, amaranth, and oats
  7. Plant-based proteins such as hemp, pumpkin and pea proteins
  8. Avocados
  9. Nuts and seeds
  10. Blueberries
  11. Non-dairy kinds of milk
