What Does Green Coffee Bean Extract Do? (Hint: less caffeine)

Nothing beats a hot cup of coffee on a chilly morning, right? 

It provides instant energy and supercharges your body to kick-start the day (especially when you add potent tonics like reishi mushroom and astragalus extract).

What does green coffee bean extract do?
Green coffee beans are unroasted coffee beans. By not roasting the bean, while it’s not as visually appealing as roasted coffee beans, nor offer the same taste and aroma, green coffee bean extract may improve the retention of some nourishing compounds. Studies show that green coffee extract may have about 20% of the caffeine, may be a mild stimulate, may support healthy blood glucose levels and may reduce some cardiovascular risk factors.

The Maillard reaction, a chemical process between amino acids and sugars which occur during the roasting process, provide all the different flavors and aromas and contribute to coffee’s antioxidant activity that nourishes our brain, heart, and soul. 

Some of these chemicals include but are not limited to:

  • hydrocinnamic acids
  • caffeine
  • chlorogenic acid
  • diterpenes
  • trigonelline 
  • cafestol, and 
  • melanoidins  

In simple terms, green coffee beans are the unroasted version of coffee. 

This simple act of not roasting the bean is a game-changer in the world of coffee.

That’s because, while green coffee bean are not as appealing to the eyes, nose, and tastebuds, there may be more excellent retention of nourishing compounds like chlorogenic acids. 

But before you replace your roasted cup of java with a cup of green coffee, here is what you need to know. 

Is Green Coffee Bean Extract a Stimulant?

To answer this question, we must first define what a stimulant is and what it does. 

Stimulants cover a broad class of compounds and drugs that are specifically used to increase the activity of the central nervous system, which increases alertness, attention, energy, and physical activity. 

Two of coffee's primary components are caffeine and a family of compounds called chlorogenic acids. 

The mechanisms of action for caffeine are mediated in four different ways.

  1. Antagonism of adenosine receptors
  2. Inhibition of phosphodiesterase
  3. The release of calcium from intracellular stores
  4. Antagonism of benzodiazepin receptors

More than eighty different chlorogenic acids were detected in green coffee 

Furthermore, the roasting process reduced chlorogenic acid but increased caffeine to a specific roasting level. 

  • Medium-roasted coffee has the highest amount of caffeine. 
  • And caffeine levels can also vary due to the coffee bean type. 
  •  

    For instance, Robusta beans have a higher level of caffeine than Arabica beans.

    While green coffee was found to have, on average, about one-fifth the amount of caffeine as medium-roasted beans, it does contain enough caffeine to be considered a mild stimulant. (1)

    Green Coffee Bean Extract Benefits

    While no one compound in plants works as an individual entity, a hypothesis has been drawn that chlorogenic acids (the most abundant polyphenolic compound found in green coffee beans) are the family of compounds responsible for the potential health benefits.

    In a randomized control trial looking at how green coffee bean affects serum adipocytokines and the body composition in obese women, 

    64 women were divided into two groups

    The intervention group received 400 milligrams of green coffee bean extract daily for eight weeks, and the other group received a placebo. 

    Both groups were put on a calorie-restricted diet. 

    Significant reductions in the body weight, body mass and fat mass indices, and waist-to-hip circumference ratio were observed in both groups, but the decrease was higher in the intervention group. 

    Also, total serum cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, leptin, and plasma-free fatty acids significantly decreased in the intervention group after energy and fiber intake adjustment. 

    The serum adiponectin (the protein hormone regulating glucose and fatty acid breakdown) concentration increased dramatically in the intervention group. 

    It was therefore concluded that green coffee bean extract combined with a calorie-restricted diet affects fat accumulation and lipid metabolism in obese people. 

    It is believed that the primary mechanism for green coffee extracts weight loss results is its ability to inhibit glucose uptake into the bloodstream. (5)

    Blood pressure and CVD

    In a randomized controlled trial examining chlorogenic acid's safety and effectiveness in lowering blood pressure, green coffee extract proved safe and effective. 

    The 28 participants received either a placebo or 140 milligrams of green coffee extract daily. 

    While there was no difference in body mass index or pulse rate between the two groups, there was a significant decrease in blood pressure with the group that ingested the green coffee extract. 

    It was concluded that Chlorogenic acid from green coffee extract is effective for decreasing blood pressure and safe for those with mild hypertension. (6)

    In a review discussing how the consumption of green coffee extract reduces blood pressure and body composition by influencing 11β-HSD1 Enzyme Activity in Healthy Individuals, it was concluded that while further research is needed, green coffee could play a role in reducing cardiovascular risk factors. (7)

    When Should I Take Green Coffee Bean Extract?

    Before discussing the best time to take green coffee bean extract, reviewing if it is right for you is vital. First, you should clearly understand the basics, essential properties, the difference between roasted and green coffee beans, and what uses have been validated by human research. 

    Please note it is best to consult with your healthcare provider if you have chosen that green coffee extract is suitable for you. 

    As stated earlier in this article, research suggests it has a good safety profile, and taking up to 400 milligrams twice daily was found to be safe and effective in healthy individuals. 

    Taking green coffee extract 30 minutes before your most significant meals to inhibit glucose uptake into your bloodstream is the most well-accepted and the most effective method.
