If you have ever wondered why pineapple coconut water is so good for you, you have come to the right place!
In this fun and helpful article, we review two of our favorite tropical foods;
- Coconut, and
- Pineapple
Then, we’ll review what makes these two foods so exceptional when combined and enjoyed in our delicious beverage:
How is pineapple coconut water good for you?
Pineapples and coconuts are highly nourishing tropical fruits that provide a broad spectrum of unique compounds that may support a healthy inflammation response and offer a refreshing way to support properly balanced rehydration.
Let’s now get into the delicious details of what makes these two drinks so unique, tasty, nutritious, and delicious.
Pineapple Coconut Water is a tasty beverage that is high in natural electrolytes
Coconut Water
The nourishing qualities of coconut water seem almost endless, but here are 3 big reasons coconut water is so good for you:
- Coconut water is Low-calorie
- Coconut water is super-hydrating, and
- Coconut water is naturally rich in electrolytes
Dubbed "nature's sports drink" and "life-enhancer" by marketers, it's no wonder why celebrities have replaced their acai berry drinks and Kabbalah water with coconut water.
In fact, in times of famine and war, coconut water has been used as an intravenous fluid and saved many lives. It's the only natural substance that can be safely injected into the human bloodstream.
Coconut water contains many naturally occurring bioactive enzymes such as:
- acid phosphatase
- catalase
- Dehydrogenase
- Diastase
- peroxidase
- RNA polymerases
Altogether, these enzymes may support healthy digestion and metabolism.
Additionally, coconut water is a source of B-complex vitamins such as riboflavin, niacin, thiamin, pyridoxine, and folates. These vitamins are required for proper replenishment of fluid uptake into the cells.
Lastly, another great reason why coconut water is such a superstar is that fresh coconut water also has a small amount of vitamin C (ascorbic acid), providing about 2.4 mcg. Vitamin C is the body's primary water-soluble antioxidant that may support defense mechanisms throughout the body against free radicals that attack and damage normal cells.
Despite its very light consistency, coconut water has a better composition of minerals like calcium, iron, manganese, magnesium, and zinc than some foods like oranges.
Coconut water is commonly offered to patients with diarrhea in many tropical regions to replace fluid loss from the gastrointestinal tract and reduce the need for intravenous therapy.
The osmolarity of tender coconut water is slightly greater than WHO-recommended ORS (Oral Rehydration Therapy) osmolarity. The presence of amino acids, enzymes, minerals, and fatty acids may account for this higher osmolarity.
As you can see, not only is coconut water exceptionally tasty, the nutrition each drink contains is impressive.
Now, let’s look at the incredibly delicious pineapple.
Pineapple
Here are three reasons why pineapple is so good for you.
1. Pineapples are famous for being a rich source of bromelain.
But what exactly is bromelain?
Bromelain is a complex mixture of substances that can be extracted from the pineapple's stem and fibrous fruit core. Among the dozens of components in this crude extract, the best studied are a group of protein-digesting enzymes.
Bromelain is a type of enzyme known as protease. It breaks other proteins apart by cutting the chains of amino acids. Proteins consist of one or more chains of amino acids called polypeptides. To be more specific, bromelain is a cysteine protease that specifically breaks apart proteins wherever they have a cysteine amino acid.
2. Pineapples are high in nutrition and loaded with nourishing vitamins and minerals.
Pineapple is an excellent source of the trace mineral manganese, an essential cofactor in many enzymes important in energy production and antioxidant defenses.
For example, the key oxidative enzyme, superoxide dismutase (SOD), which may support the disarming of potential free radicals produced within the mitochondria, requires manganese.
In addition to manganese, pineapple is a nourishing source of thiamin, a B vitamin that acts as a cofactor in enzymatic reactions central to energy production.
3. Bromelain may also support a healthy inflammation response.
NF Kappa Beta is a protein signaling molecule that triggers the inflammation process and is at the top of the inflammation cascade.
There are many aspects to how this signaling molecule becomes triggered. Once activated, it has a trickle-down effect on all other parts of the cascade, like Cox-1, Cox-2, IL-6, etc.
While we know through animal and tissue culture studies that bromelain does have a direct effect on modulating NK Kappa Beta, we don’t understand precisely how. Most studies done on humans showing the potential impacts of Bromelain (as an individual compound) are based on symptom relief and a scoring scale. Therefore, they are subjective based on how the individual is feeling and not showing effects on specific markers.
Coconut Water and Pineapple: A unique and traditional Chinese Medicine Perspective
In traditional Chinese medicine, there are no good or bad foods.
There are appropriate and inappropriate energetic foods for every individual's constitution.
Cold foods are yin, and yang foods are warming.
Foods eaten in their raw state are considered energetically cold (yin) and refreshing to the body; if over-consumed, they may damage the spleen’s energetic system.
In traditional Chinese medicine, the spleen is paired with the stomach in the middle burner, which is the central point for proper digestion and absorption. The stomach is the pot, and the spleen is the burner under the pot.
When Chinese medicine speaks about the energy of specific foods being cold or hot, it is not referring to temperature in degrees but the energetic properties of the food. One of the basic underlying principles of TCM nutrition is that the majority of your foods should be cooked and eaten at room temperature to support optimal digestion.
Pineapple is generally considered warming in temperature, tonifies Yin, is sweet in flavor, and clears heat, dampness, and water accumulation.
But, you may find information that states it is considered neutral. The reason is due to its ability to possibly down-regulate the inflammation process.
On the other hand, coconut is warm in temperature, sweet in flavor, and is known to tonify blood and Qi. Coconut affects the energy of the stomach, spleen, heart, and large intestine channels.
This beautiful marriage of coconut water and pineapple may provide the body with the balance of nourishment to support efficient and healthy hydration and recovery.
