Mulberry leaves are a true treasure to the Asian culture. Its traditional medicinal properties are in some of China’s oldest books of remedies. There are references to the leaf tea as Sang Ye Cha or Godly hermit’s tea. The Greeks refer to it as a tree with revitalizing potential. All parts of the Mulberry tree have very interesting applications and not just for nourishment. The leaf was used for raising silkworms and the bark was used for making paper. This food is a staple in traditional chinese medicine as it is bitter and sweet in flavor and cold in nature, in other words, a great restorative food. In total there are 10 different species of mulberry trees with the most common being the black or white mulberry. The leaves are green and spade shaped and are generally harvested in the autumn. The color and shape of the leaf can vary based on the species.

Mulberry trees like a warm and well-drained loamy soil. It can take up to 15 years for it to bear fruit. It has been said the best fruit comes from the oldest trees. The mulberry leaf contains between 15%-28% protein which means it provides a significant level of essential amino acids. The calcium levels are also quite impressive. It contains per serving 25 times more calcium than milk and 40 times more than cabbage.

This amazing leaf also packs the wonderful amino acid, GABA. Taking GABA as a supplement does not work well if it is not from a natural food source with high bioavailability. Studies have indicated that this amino acid effectively supports a healthy mood and mental outlook. Also due to the unique combination of compounds like Isoquercitrin and Astragalin, mulberry leaves may support the body’s ability to maintain healthy blood sugar levels as well. Additionally, a phytochemical known as Moranoline found in the leaf may in fact slow the digestive process of carbohydrates to glucose. Mulberry leaf has also shown great promise as a superstar for lipid issues. In one clinical trial subjects were given 280 mg of mulberry leaf three times daily over a 12 week period. The conclusion of this study saw total cholesterol, triglyceride, and LDL levels dropped by 4.9%, 14.1%, and 5.6% from their respective baseline. The real exciting news in this study is that HDL (good cholesterol) increased by 19.7%. These results show promise for those who may have “metabolic” based issues.

Suggested Use: Mix one tablespoon in your favorite juice or smoothie.

Other Preparations:

Infusion: Use the ratio of 1 tea bag of product for every 8 ounces of distilled water. Bring water to a boil and then take off stove. Put tea in pot or a mug fill with water and cover for 15 minutes. (This method is specific for whole leaf herbs and teas).

Tincture: This method can take 15 to 30 days. You will need 3 items (mason jar with cover, the herb/herbs of your choice, liquid for extracting). The extracting liquid can be alcohol, alcohol/water combo, vinegar or vegetable glycerin. Take the product and fill the jar ¾ full, add the liquid of your choice and close the jar. Then shake the jar so everything is well mixed. Give the jar a good 5 minute shake, several times a day. After 15 to 30 days strain and bottle in glass tincture jars.
